Earthquake Preparedness Tips

An Earthquake is a sudden shaking of the Earth’s surface–will you be prepared when one strikes?

As a Californian, you should always be prepared for an earthquake. Living only a few miles from the San Andreas fault, the next earthquake is right around the corner. When you feel the ground start shaking, you’ll ask yourself, “What do I do?” There won’t be any time to watch a 2 minute YouTube video, so it’s best to do it now while the Earth is relatively motionless.

Earthquake Preparedness Tips

  1. Remove objects from over your bed. When the ground starts shaking, the last thing you want is a head injury. Your wall may look plain, but it’s better than getting a concussion (or worse).
  2. Anchor your possessions. Things like shelves and book cases and TV stands should be anchored to the wall and the ground to keep them from tipping over.
  3. Pack emergency kits. If the next earthquake is a big one, it’ll surely cause a power outage. You should have the following items: water, food, flashlight, radio, can opener, batteries, a first-aid kit, and anything that your pet may need if you have one.
  4. Emergency planning with your family and friends. Make sure that you talk with your family about a checkpoint at which to meet if an earthquake strikes. Cellphones will not be very useful so knowing where to go is crucial.
  • What to do if you’re inside: If you find yourself inside make sure to drop, cover, and hang on.  All while covering your head and neck.
  • What to do if you’re outside: Drop to avoid falling, and stay clear of any buildings, trees, or tall structures that could fall on you.
  • What to do if you’re in a car: Pull over and avoid any bridges or overpasses.
