Yesterday we explored the “dangers” of owning a vehicle that doesn’t surpass safety standards and ratings. Driving a vehicle that is not proven to be safe during impact could but both you and your family in harms way. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety conducts thousands of tests of vehicles each year and rates them according to their safety, impact protection, roll-over text, whiplash damages and more. Your California auto insurance rate is partly determined by these statistics and each vehicle is rated according to its ability to withstand an accident.

This year, IIHS has determined these vehicles at the TOP SAFETY PICKS for 2012:

Fiat 500

Chevrolet Cruze

Acura TL

Buick LaCrosse

Audi A6

Acura MDX

Buick Enclave

Audi A3

Chrysler Town & Country

Ford F-150

Honda CR-V

Chevrolet Equinox

Each of these vehicles is the top safety pick for the category of car they fall into. IIHS names anywhere between 5-7 vehicles per category to allow car buyers more of a variety of safety approved vehicles. Different manufacturers make the list each year, but the most consistent companies include: Chevrolet, Honda, Acura, Toyota and Mercedes. Be sure to contact your California auto insurance agent today to determine the safety rating of your current vehicle.
