How to Prepare Your Kids for a Natural Disaster

We all want to protect our children, and preparing them for a natural disaster may be one of the best ways to do just that.

If you think that natural disasters are traumatizing for adults, imagine how they must be for children. Children mimic and learn from example, so it is your duty as a parent to be strong and prepare for the worst possible scenarios. Handling a natural disaster is one of the best ways we can make everything less stressful for children. Here are a few tips on how you can prepare your kids for a natural disaster.

  1. Emergency Checklist for Kids
A disaster kit which includes the essentials for life, a child emergency checklist is composed of comfort items to help them through this hard time. Include things like games, stuffed animals, and other things that can help them through a worst-case natural disaster scenario. Try and limit these to three or four items, or as many as they can comfortably carry in a backpack.
  2. Practice the Evacuation Plan
You have the checklist in case of disaster, and now your child needs to know what to do in the event of said disaster. Rehearsing the evacuation drill will help the child go through less stress as they will already have an idea of what to do. These drills can be turned into games based on the child’s level of attention and recall. Every kind of natural disaster requires a different plan, and the Department of Homeland Security has just the games for you and your children.
