Perform a House Audit to Save Energy This Fall

Performing a house audit will keep your house warm, comfortable, and energy-efficient throughout the whole of fall and winter.

According to the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Americans are using less energy and using more renewable energy than ever before! This makes sense, people are more energy conscious due to climate change and renewable energy appliances have dropped in recent years. Renewables still only take up a fraction of the total energy supply, but the increase in their installations are encouraging. Here are ways you can perform a house edit and save energy for the fall and winter.

  1. Seal Your Windows
If there are any drafts that come through your windows, that’s extra energy that’s spent on heating your home, and extra dollars added to your energy bill. Seal your windows from the inside to save you potentially hundreds a year! Remove the trim from your windows and use a low-expanding foam sealant to make your windows more energy-efficient.
  2. Insulate Your Attic
Your attic gets really hot during the summer, so it’s a good idea to wait until the fall to insulate it. Without proper insulation, heat will escape through your attic and keep your furnace running longer. Again, wasting energy and increasing your energy bill.
  3. Make HVAC Inspections
Heating your home takes a lot of energy, so you might as well make sure that a majority of that energy does not go to waste. Inspect your HVAC appliances to ensure they are running at optimal efficiency. Change their filters and get a professional’s opinion about the state of your appliances.

A quality home insurance policy covers your home against fire, storm, smoke, theft, vandalism, and a number of other damages. But a home insurance policy is only good if you know how to use it to serve you, not the other way around–especially on Thanksgiving.
