Motorcycle Safety Tips for California Cyclists
This weekend our staff member, Christi witnessed a vehicle collide with a motorcycle just down the street from our office. Luckily the motorcyclist only suffered minor injuries and was able to “walk away” from the accident with a few bumps and bruises, but that is not always the outcome in this situation. Fortunately the cyclist still had their life and body intact, but the beautiful bike was totaled as it slid across Chapman Ave. into oncoming traffic.
Riding a motorcycle is not only dangerous, but can also create unwanted stress in the lives of riders and other drivers on the road. In the case of Sunday’s accident, all parties involved were upset, crying, injured and shocked that this happened. If you must drive a motorcycle, or enjoy the freedom of the open road without the protection of a vehicle around you, then be sure to follow these safety tips while operation your cycle.
- Have the proper California motorcycle insurance coverage
- Avoid blind spots
- Use your mirrors AND turn your head to look
- Study the surface where you are driving
- Always be ready to escape danger by having more than 1-way-out
- Wear the proper gear
- Ride in open zones, where vehicles are sparse
Over 80,000 motorcyclists each year in the United States are injured in accidents, and over 5,000 of those accidents end in death. Be sure to drive cautiously and safely among traffic while on the road. Often time’s cars cannot see a motorcycle coming up behind them and that’s when accidents can occur. They may be cheaper to operate and “fun” to ride, but if money is the issue, we highly recommend taking the bus or some other form of transportation so you are not the next victim in the statistic!
