Keeping your California Home Insurance Policy Up-To-Date

Keeping your California Home Insurance Policy Up-To-Date

Maintaining the most current information on your California home insurance policy is crucial. When upgrades and modifications are made to a home and not recorded on the home insurance policy, it can cause issues in coverage. Here are a few helpful tips on how to keep your California home insurance up to date. You will first need: Current homeowner’s insurance policy, Receipts or appraisals for high-value items and a Camera then follow these steps:

1-      Get familiar with your California homeowner’s insurance policy. Call your insurance agent and go over the amount and types of coverage you have. Evaluate if you need to update your policy to reflect any changes in your lifestyle.

2-      Let your insurance agent know when you get new jewelry, antiques, art or other costly personal property. Keep the receipts or appraisals for these items and submit copies to the insurance company, if requested. You may want to add an insurance endorsement or personal possessions floater to your homeowner’s insurance policy to make sure you have adequate coverage if these items are lost, destroyed or stolen.

3-      Calculate an approximate replacement cost for what you own. Include the cost of any improvements you made to the property. Make sure and update your homeowner’s insurance policy if you made significant home improvements or if the cost of replacement has dramatically increased since you originally purchased your policy.

4-      You can reduce your homeowner’s coverage if you have experienced financial setbacks. Always increase your coverage if you have accumulated significant assets. Evaluate the amount of liability insurance needed to protect your family from risk. A great inexpensive way to increase your liability coverage is with a Personal Umbrella policy.  Ask your insurance agent for a quote.

5-      Contact your insurance agent to review your California home insurance policy or purchase additional coverage on a regular basis.  It’s up to you to make sure you cover all your bases.
