Home Safety 101

Home Safety 101

101

Everyone wants to protect their home from damage, wear and tear and potential threats. Here are some simple home safety tips that will help you to determine if your current electrical and wiring system are about to take a serious dive.

  • Look for breakers and fuses that blow out regularly
  • Look for outlets that are warm or have black marks around the switch plate
  • Look for any kind of burning smell or flickering lights
  • Monthly observe your junction box and power panel

Some houses built in 1970 were built using aluminum wire that has been known to spark and cause problems. This issue can be resolved by pulling the wires in each outlet out a foot or two and bond a piece of copper wire to the aluminum wire.

Check to see how many prongs your outlets have. If your home’s outlets have only two prongs to insert then it is very likely that your home is not grounded. You would not need to rewire in this case, but to only add a ground and change out the outlets. It’s important to get an annual or semi-annual home inspection with a reputable company.

Protect your home, your California home insurance and family’s livelihood depends on it.
