Decorate Safely This Holiday Season!
Decorating your home can be one of the best ways to get into the holiday spirit! However, not all holiday decorations are created equal, and some are safer than others. Here are some tips to make sure your decorations do not pose a threat to your safety.
The Tree:
If you plan to use a live tree, keep it away from fireplaces and heaters to avoid it from catching fire. Always keep a fire extinguisher nearby, just in case. Water your tree well, a dry tree can go up in flames quicker than you may imagine. If you are going with an artificial tree, make sure it is labeled “fire resistant” so that it is less susceptible to fires.
Wrapping Paper:
What should you do with the wrapping paper that is left after opening all the presents? Many people take the easy way out and burn it in the fireplace. However, this can be very dangerous and can cause flash fires. Instead of burning, recycle your used wrapping paper or reuse it when possible.
Lights:
When putting up lights, always make sure to double-check them for any frayed wires, broken sockets, or loose connections. When using a ladder to hang them, have someone support the base to ensure you do not tip over. Make sure to turn off all lights before you go to bed or leave the house. Putting your lights on a timer can be an easy way to monitor them.
