Get up to date on the state’s laws concerning your employees, and remember to always keep your company protected with our reliable California Business Insurance!

According to The Orange County Register, the state of California has a law that requires employers to accommodate working parents for certain school activities of their children, says Grace Horoupian, partner in the Irvine office of labor law firm Fisher & Phillips LLP.

“The Bureau of Labor Statistics recently estimated that 62.2% of married couple families have two employed parents,” Horoupian said. Working parents continuously struggle to balance their jobs with attendance at such activities as parent-teacher conferences, assemblies, volunteer activities, and class parties, she noted. This is all in addition to the need to stay home when a child is sick or school is not in session.

California employers should be mindful of these leaves that their employees can use, which can include:

School Activities: Under California’s Family-School Partnership Act, California employers with 25 or more employees at the same location must provide their employees up to 40 hours off per calendar year for participating in their child’s activities sponsored by the public or private school in grades K – 12 or attending a licensed day-care facility. Employers can limit employees to no more than eight hours off per month for school leave.

Suspensions From School: California employers must allow an employee who is the parent or guardian of a child suspended from school any necessary time off to appear at the school because of the suspension, Horoupian said.

Kin Care: Companies that provide sick leave to their employees must allow employees to use half of their accrued sick leave to care for a sick child, parent, spouse, domestic partner, or the child of a domestic partner.

Vacation/Personal Time Off: Employees can also use any vacation or personal time off, subject to their employers vacation policies, for any other necessary absences, she added.
