Preparing for a drought is not something most of America is worried about. This winter has been really tough for a lot of the states, and many haven’t dealt with this much snow in decades. California, on the other hand is in its third year in drought conditions.  The average number of inches is typically 13.43 and we are a bit behind schedule…season so this means it’s time to take action! Many cities have established water saving programs allowing residents to water only on certain days or use certain appliances during the evening hours only.

California residents can help reduce their water use by following a few simple steps. Although the lack of water is fantastic for California flood insurance claims, it is not good for crops, home plants or fire prevention.

10 ways to cut back on water usage:

  1. Adjust sprinklers on lawn and flower beds to the lowest setting your plant thrive on
  2. Switch to an efficient front loading washing machine (Saving 77% of water usage)
  3. Turn off the water tap while brushing your teeth
  4. Wash only full loads of laundry
  5. Upgrade to low-flush toilets (higher power, more efficient)
  6. Wash your car at commercial washed that recycle the water supply
  7. Shorten your shower (set a timer)
  8. Add mulch or wood chips to your planter beds to help absorb water
  9. Fix leaky faucets and pipes
  10. Collect rainwater in buckets and use it to water potted plants (if we ever get any rain!)
  11. BONUS: Make sure your California home insurance plan covers flood, mold and natural disaster incidents. It’s better to be prepared then to pay out of pocket for a big claim expense!
