Donuts, Coffee and Fast Food Drive Thru’s

Donuts, Coffee and Fast Food Drive Thru’s

Drive-thru food purchases, cause many accidents per year in the U.S.

Drivers that assume the ten and two positions on their steering wheel,  turn their radio off and have all of their mirrors adjusted properly are typically not the cause of an auto accident. What does cause most traffic accidents is the fact that millions of people drive distracted. Distracted by hundreds of things and not focused on the open road. Over time, driving had become more of a video game type scenario with tons of buttons and settings to be managed. Today’s vehicles are chalked full of gadgets, sensors, buzzers, beepers and more. Food still tops the charts when it comes to amount of accidents caused by distracted driving, and an increasing statistic has us wondering if drive-thru restaurants should be re-evaluated.

Some of the most common morning commute food distractions include:

  • Eating a donut
  • Drinking a beverage
  • Spilling hot coffee
  • Exiting a fast food drive-thru
  • And more…

Other examples include driving while on the phone, texting, adjusting a navigation system and dealing or dealing with unruly passengers are also common distractions that commonly cause accidents. The main key is to wait and eat or drink while at a stoplight or once you have reached your destination. A bite of your hamburger is defiantly not worth an accident that could cause your California auto insurance premium to rise or even worse seriously injure yourself or another person.
