Dogs vs. Insurance

Dogs vs. Insurance

Over the years there have been countless insurance claims of dog attacks. Some insurance carriers have developed a list of “restricted breeds” that they will not place homeowners’ coverage on due to the perceived aggressive tendencies.

Because any dog has the ability to bite or harm a human, most states across the U.S. have developed their own definition of what a “dangerous dog” is considered. By defining different breeds of dogs that are un-insurable, it’s getting harder and harder to write insurance coverage on the following breeds with your California Home Insurance Policy:

Pitbull’s Rottweiler’s, German Shepherd, Huskies, Malamute’s, Doberman Pinschers & Chow Chow’s

Some states have chosen to define individual dogs as dangerous because of recorded behavior, others have chosen to include the entire breed as “un-insurable” in their state.  These lists do not make it impossible to insure your property while the dog is living there, but the insurance agent and underwriter will look over each case with extreme caution. More information can be found on the National Underwriter website.

If you own one of these dogs, or are thinking about purchasing one in the future, may we suggest you speak with your insurance agent first. We have quite a few companies that still offer to insure these breeds. We would be happy to answer any questions you have!
