Combat Stress this National Stress Awareness Month, better manage your stress

Combat Stress this National Stress Awareness Month

Learn how you can better manage your stress this April.

April is National Stress Awareness Month, a public awareness campaign that looks to draw attention to the damaging effects of stress on our mental, emotional, and physical health.  In honor of this month, you should make a conscious effort to keep your stress levels under control.  Here are some suggestions to help you better manage your stress this month.

Exercise

While getting enough exercise is good for your physical health, did you know that engaging in vigorous physical activity is also beneficial to your mental and emotional health?  This is because exercise is a great way to release any pent-up stress that has been weighing on you.  Working out helps to metabolize the stress hormones in your system and it is also a great way to distract yourself from stressful thoughts.  If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed, then taking the time to hit the gym or go on a jog might help you feel calmer and more in control.

Get Enough Sleep

When you are sleep deprived, you are not at your best.  When you are tired, it is harder to manage your emotions, think logically, and work efficiently.  When you are unable to function at your best, you can start to feel frustrated and stressed out.  Unfortunately, these feelings can make it harder to fall and stay asleep; setting off a harmful cycle of sleep deprivation and rising stress levels.  This is why it’s important to relax before bed and get an adequate amount of sleep every night.

Take Breaks

Oftentimes, it’s just not possible to avoid our stressors.  However, just because you can’t avoid them completely doesn’t mean that you can’t step away.  For instance, if you are working on a stressful work project and you feel yourself starting to become overwhelmed, then excuse yourself and take a few moments to just breathe.  Once you calm yourself down, you will have an easier time thinking logically and feel more in control of the situation.  This in turn, will keep your stress levels at a manageable level.
