Car Insurance Discounts for Married Couples
Married couples should share almost everything, including car insurance.
Certainly one of the biggest moments in your entire life will be the day you get married to the love of your life. Wedding day jitters and all the past and future planning can get the hyperventilation going for some, if not most, people. But have you spoken to your significant other about finances? This conversation can definitely be stressful, but it’s a necessary conversation to have—especially if you want to have a long, beautiful, and successful marriage (like Carl and Ellie Fredricksen from the beloved move, “Up”). If you are about to get, or have just been married, contact your insurer to see if your newlywed status qualifies you for some major savings. You may end up pleasantly surprised.
When combining policies is a good idea
If you and your spouse have excellent driving records, and no recent gaps in coverage, chances are you’ll be saving some major Benjamins. Insuring multiple vehicles within the same policy may qualify you for further discounts. But what if you and your spouse are insured by different companies? No worries. Simply compare companies to see which insurer will offer you the coverage you need at the most competitive price.
When combining policies is not a good idea
If you married the Goofy of driving, combining policies may not be the best idea. Combining high-risk and low-risk policies will likely decrease the high-risker’s premium while increasing the low-risker’s premium. This is because insurance companies take into consideration the driving record of all family members.
You could choose to exclude your partner’s insurance, but should they get into an accident driving your car—the coverage will have to be done by you, not them.
