California Winter Insurance

cali winter

As “winter” approaches…we say “winter” because in California where our office is located, the weather does not ever get unbearably cold like most of the United States. However, many people choose to use their fireplace as an alternate heating source, rather than their whole house heater.

Fireplaces serve a great purpose in each home. They heat the room they are in very quickly, smell nice and of course allow Santa to come in and leave all sorts of presents! But most fireplaces sit dormant in the Spring & Summer months causing them to become a potentially dangerous place for the first few fires of the season. It’s estimated that 5-10% of all house fires in the U.S. and over 300 deaths per year come from the improper use of a fireplace.

Make sure and have your fireplace cleaned out, or take time to check all the valves and parts yourself. Another suggestion is to install a fireplace insert into your existing brick or stone fireplace space. They are stove-looking appliances that have an exhaust system and create radiant heat to better heat your home.

For more information on fireplace safety, please contact your local fire department or visit Lowe’s to purchase a fireplace insert and make sure your California home insurance is up to date with proper fire coverage and liability.
