Be Prepared for House Fires by Creating a Family Escape Plan
The typical California home insurance policy will cover property damage caused by fire. The unfortunate truth is that many families are not prepared for the stress and danger associated with a house fire. We all think it won’t happen to us. You can replace your belongings, but you cannot buy a new family. Help your household prepare to a fire by creating an escape plan.
The first step in fire evacuation plan is to create a map of your home. In the map, all rooms should be drawn and all possible exits should be noted, including windows. Each member of the family should have their own copy and the route drawn on it should be the quickest way out of the house from their bedroom.
When creating this plan, make sure you include your family in the discussion. Pick a meeting place outside the home. Make sure it is far enough away from the home that you will not be at risk. Many families decide on the end of the driveway because it is often a good distance away and it will make it easy for you to flag down the emergency trucks.
Part of educating your family on fire safety is to instill in them the importance of never going back into the house to get their belongings. To ensure you can replace everything you lose in a fire, add endorsements to your California home insurance for particularly expensive items that may not be covered sufficiently under existing policy limits. One of your experienced agents can assist you with this process.
