Avoid Grilling Accidents This Summer

Avoid Grilling Accidents This Summer

With the California summer in full swing, the risk of injuries as a result of outdoor grills and barbecues is heightened. Although family and friends always appreciate home cooking, and it can also be wonderfully relaxing, you should always take the proper safety precautions.

Tips on preventing injuries and fire when using an outdoor grill:

•    When cooking using a propane tank, always check the air and gas connections. Ensure the tubes are not blocked or damaged in any way.

•    Although wearing loose, comfortable clothing is a summer staple when barbecuing, it can be dangerous. Wear a sturdy apron and grilling mitts that protect your lower arms, as well as your hands.

•    Be careful where you leave matches and other barbecue lighting equipment, especially when children are around.

•    Some grills produce carbon monoxide, which can be fatal when inhaled, so be sure to always barbecue in a well ventilated area.

•    Use caution when disposing of hot coals; don’t place them in potentially flammable containers, or near a building. It’s a smart idea to thoroughly smother hot coals with water to be certain any heat is extinguished.

By adhering to the recommended safety precautions, you’re not only helping to reduce the risk of injury, but also lowering the risk of property loss due to a fire, and a claim being made against your home insurance. In the event of a serious burn or grilling accident, call 911 for emergency help.
